Affirmations for parents

Affirmations for parents are here! I want to share with you about them because they work! I use them on the regular with people I see in both my therapy practice and with Wise Girl Workshops’s parent and girl participants.

An affirmation is something we say to ourselves on repeat. Affirmations are powerful words filled with good intention. They are ways to keep parents on track and focused.

Affirmations for parents have the potential to be both effective and useful in helping parents stay connected to their goals and intentions around parenting. Many parents get lost in the day to day shuffle, losing track of their intentions and goals. Between carpooling, making meals, and putting out daily fires, it is easy for parents to lose sight of what they really want when it comes to parenting. Having a simple phrase to repeat several times throughout the day re-centers their attention and fosters positive feelings. When parents feel good, it emanates to their children. You really can’t go wrong with having positive thoughts; everyone benefits.

Many theories and techniques are linked to affirmations. In essence, these theories focus on how we can change the way we think. When we change how we think, we then change the way we feel and act.

One Theory for Affirmations for Parents

For example, let’s say you are working with the affirmation (AKA thought), “I am patient with my daughter at all times of day.” You will feel more capable of patience when your kid is asking you her thousandth question of the day. Pair this with taking a deep breath, and your nervous system will be more ready and regulated towards patience. Repeating this affirmation again will increase your odds of staying in control of yourself and your actions. Affirmations are thoughts, leading to feelings, and leading to actions. They contribute to a powerful thought cycle which is extremely effective and useful. You just have to be open to trying.

I recently contributed to an article in Verywell Family100 Affirmations for Parents That Are Actually Helpful” by Elise Cinelli. Cinelli provides a stellar list of helpful affirmation for parents. Take a look if you need help on where to start.
