Healthy Relationships are a huge part of life. From friendships to romantic relationships to sexual relationships, they are vitally important to a girls well being as she ages.
Unfortunately, not all relationships are healthy. In some relationships, girls are treated very poorly and are hurt physically, emotionally, and sexually.
Learning about healthy relationships can help set your daughter up for success in life as relationships are everywhere and can be one of the best aspects of life.
Big Statistics
But the statistics are a big reality when it comes relationships.
When it comes to friendships, a UCLA study from 2018 reports, “…over two thirds of friends were either lost or gained during the first year in middle school.” The study further shows the link to friendship instability had far reaching results leading to lower grades. What we are talking about here is how important friendships are and how they can shift, which impacts girls self-esteem and confidence greatly.
When it comes to romance, the Pew Research Center says that only only 35% of teens ages 13–17 have dated or been romantically involved with another person. This doesn’t mean girls aren’t thinking about relationships. There can be great cognitive dissonance between what girls are doing and what they think they should be doing. So, helping to normalize the landscape and preparing them with tools on how to know what is healthy versus unhealthy before they start a relationship is helpful.
Then, looking at physical and sexual relationships, females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. More than half of females know the perpetrator as either an intimate partner (AKA boyfriend). In addition, about 40% of females know the perpetrator as an acquaintance. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2010 Summary Report
I could go on and on with statistics about relationships. However, when it comes to teens and tweens what I hope you take away is just how important relationships are, how challenging they can be, and how youth need adult help to know what’s ok and not ok when it comes to these relationships. These kids–they are just learning how to be in the world and in relationship with each other.
